To Terry Burrows,

While waiting for my son to finish practice, I overheard a very familiar voice.  I turned to see the video only to confirm what I suspected.  Dr. Kelly Lockewood was speaking about the maximum edge. sharpening and profiling of hockey blades I listened to what she had to say because, not only did she work with some of my former athletes, but she is also a highly respected colleague of mine and I trusted what she said to have merit.

I decided to try maximum edge on my son’s skates.   I could not believe what I saw after Terry had profiled and sharpened my son’s skates.  The difference in his skating, balance and speed was very incredible.  My son was extremely happy with maximum edge’s profiling on his blades.  He noticed immediately how smooth and stable his skating was and how easy it was to get into the ice.

Thinking that this was wonderful for hockey, I was curious but still skeptical and hesitant about how they would do with figure skates. After all, we are very particular about our equipment (like all athletes) and extremely reluctant to trust new people working with it.  It is common to hear our athletes complain about their sharpenings. After some feedback from figure skaters who had tried maximum edge and raved about it I decided to give Maximum Edge a try. The first thing I noticed was the glide and running edge of my blade.  After several minutes I experimented with turns and balance and was very surprised to find how smooth and easy these felt.  A few of my athletes decided to try maximum edge at the same time, so I was able to get feedback on what they felt as I watched them perform.

As a coach observing my athletes, I have found them to have considerably more balance and flow when executing turns, twizzles and footwork sequences.  Stroking sessions displayed more power efficiency in their strokes I also noticed more control and speed throughout their lifts.  As with any sport, overuse injuries are common, but I have found these athletes to have fewer since they have been using maximum edge for this past year, even though the demands of the sport are increasing.

I thank you Terry for taking the time to explain things to me so that I am well informed when I direct my athletes and my children.  You are the best!

When Brian first sharpened my skates it was like I had to but in less effort to go the same speed that I was originally going on a half inch and non profiled blade. When he profiled the skates to a 9/10 profile and changed the hollow to a 5/8ths it made skating less physically demanding. The profile and the hollow change has helped me improve my speed and ability to adapt to the WHL and I thank Brian for helping me get there.

For the past four years our Hockey Academy has had the opportunity of building a relationship with Bladz Skate Shop. In this time Bladz has supplied our athletes a skate service that has been unmatched.

The expertise that Bladz provides is second to none, whether it be their knowledge, professionalism or commitment to each athlete; they help aid athletes in achieving great results on the ice. All hockey players from novice to elite will benefit from their skate servicing program.

I am pleased to give my accounting for Bladz Skate Shop whom I believe to be unchallenged in the skate servicing industry. I wish to continue our relationship and it is without hesitation that I recommend them for any hockey player, organization and community.

The first time my dad sharpened my skates at Bladz Skate Shop, I loved it! The blade does not have a deep hollow and it feels like you have no edge, but when you cut the ice it is there. I can stop on one leg with my outside edge, that’s how good the sharpening is. A long time ago I would go to other places that sharpened my skates, and it seems they would rocker my skates and there was a shorter amount of blade on the ice.

With Maximum Edge I have more blade and therefore I get more speed. Science makes sense

 Dear Bob@Maximum Edge, Windsor.

You worked on my skates last fall in Madison, Wisconsin. Thank you for your help, your technique has improved my skating. After finishing school at Madison, I moved to Edmonton to train and play in the NWHL. I had major problems with the people who sharpened my skates…I could not even stand. The person had taken both ends off my blades.

This was right before the World Championships in Halifax in April. That is when I went to your website and found Terry at Bladz had your Maximum Edge training. He was wonderful, I told him that you had worked with me and had given me a 5/8” and 9/10 Profile. He fixed my skates!

did you know?

A smaller (ROH) Radius of Hallow, i.e. 1/2" results in a blade with a higher bite angle than a blade with a larger radius, i.e. 5/8" ROH. A higher bite angle will cause the blade to penetrate the ice deeper increasing drag.
